Abstract
"Magnificent decadence" : such were the words that Victor Hugo used, in a famous passage of Notre-Dame de Paris, to describe the architecture of the Renaissance - last gleam of splendour before the printing press stripped architecture of all its former glory. The 16th century was indeed a crucial period for the art of building in France - an art which, still enveloped in its medieval cocoon, was in the process of discovering, through architectural books, classical forms and Vitruvian theory, which explained their use. What metamorphose did this bring about? How did French architects assimilate and react to this new language and the knowledge it conveyed? Tracing the evolution of the relationship between building and printed works published in France during the 16th century, this book shows how, from the impact of the first manuals conveying the visual culture of Italy and Spain to the manifold information furnished by the ever-increasing number of treatises available from the 1540s onwards, French architects progressively arrived at complete mastery of the Vitruvian norms, and how geniuses such as Philibert De l'Orme, Jean Bullant and Pierre Lescot went on to transcend these norms and invent an original form of architecture, synthesising humanist culture, medieval traditions and modern values.
